Why we use slip leads

One of the most common questions we get asked is:
“Why do you use slip leads?”
Unfortunately, slip leads often receive a bad reputation, but like any training tool, it’s not the tool itself that is the problem—it’s how it’s used.
At K-9 Rehabilitation, we view the slip lead as a communication tool rather than a form of punishment.
When fitted and used correctly, a slip lead can provide clear, consistent communication between dog and owner, helping to create a calmer and more controlled walking experience.
Lead work isn’t just about stopping a dog from pulling.
It’s about creating connection.
It’s about teaching the dog to move with you, pay attention to you and understand what is being asked of them.
Many dogs pull because they have never been shown how to walk alongside their owner, while others are distracted, anxious, overstimulated or simply trying to get where they want to go.
A slip lead allows us to communicate clearly and fairly, helping the dog understand boundaries while giving the owner greater control and confidence.
The goal is to use it to build better communication, engagement and understanding between dog and owner.
Over time, we want the dog to choose to stay connected because they understand the expectations, not because they are being physically managed.
Like all training tools, the slip lead is only one small piece of the puzzle.
The real work comes from consistency, timing, leadership and building a relationship that your dog can trust.
🐾 A tool is only as effective as the education behind it.
At K-9 Rehabilitation, we focus on teaching both ends of the lead.
Because successful lead work starts with understanding, not force.
