Every Dogs Behaviour tells a story

When people hear the word “reactive”, they often think of a dog that barks, lunges or overreacts.

But reactivity isn’t the problem..... It’s the symptom.

Whether a dog is reactive towards other dogs, people, vehicles, noises or specific environments, their behaviour is communicating something. Every reaction has a reason, and every dog has a story.

At K-9 Rehabilitation, we believe it’s our job to understand what the dog is trying to tell us rather than simply suppressing the behaviour.

Many reactive dogs are carrying emotions such as fear, anxiety, frustration, uncertainty or overwhelm. Over time, they learn that barking, lunging or creating distance works, so they continue to use those behaviours to navigate the world around them.

Rather than asking, “How do we stop this behaviour?”

We ask:

👉 Why does the dog feel the need to behave this way?

👉 What is causing them to feel unsafe, overwhelmed or responsible?

👉 How can we help them feel more secure?

True rehabilitation isn’t just about training the dog. It’s also about educating the owner.

As owners, we often need to evolve alongside our dogs. We need to learn how to advocate for them, guide them, provide clear leadership and help them feel safe enough that they no longer feel the need to step up and handle situations themselves.

When a dog trusts that their owner has things under control, they can begin to relax.

Behaviour is communication.

When we start listening, we can begin creating lasting change.
